Scope and Content Dunbeath Castle, Caithness, Highland Dunbeath Castle is situated on a coastal promontory south of the mouth of Dunbeath River. The present castle mainly dates from the early 17th century and was remodelled and enlarged by the architect David Bryce in the late 19th century. In earlier times, a defensive ditch cut the castle promontory from the mainland. This view shows Dunbeath Castle (top), the driveway and two areas of walled garden either side of the driveway (centre). The small building in the northern walled garden (left) is an old laundry. The 19th-century stable block (bottom right) has been converted into garages and an apartment. Dunbeath Castle has a close historical association with the Sinclair family who first acquired it in the 16th century. In 1650 it was besieged by James Graham, Marquis of Montrose. The castle was sold by the Sinclairs in 1945 and remains a private residence. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
