Scope and Content Dunbeath Castle, Caithness, Highland Dunbeath Castle has a close historical association with the Sinclair Earls of Caithness, who first acquired it in the 16th century. In 1650 it was successfully besieged by James Graham, Marquis of Montrose. The defence of the castle was led by Lady Sinclair. The castle was sold by the Sinclairs in 1945 and remains a private residence. The Castle is situated on a coastal promontory south of the mouth of Dunbeath River. At present the castle itself dates from the early 17th century and was remodelled and enlarged by the architect David Bryce in the late 19th century. In earlier times, a defensive ditch cut the castle promontory off from the mainland. Dunbeath Castle (left), is part of the driveway and two walled gardens either side of the driveway (centre right). That above the drive is used as a kitchen garden and contains a greenhouse. The building in the northern walled garden below the drive is a former laundry. The 19th-century stable block can be seen amongst the trees to the above of the kitchen garden. A boat-house can be seen on the shore (foreground). Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
