Scope and Content Oblique aerial view of Torry, Aberdeen Torry was laid out according to the principles of 'Garden City' designs after 1918 by the City Council with advice from Dr William Kelly as Director of Housing. Semi-detached houses are laid out in concentric circles around Tullos Circle. This oblique aerial photograph shows the radial planning of Torry with Torry Academy in the centre. The semi-detached houses have front and back gardens, hipped roofs, and harled and painted walls. The shortages of housing in the inter-war period led to Councils planning more new developments. The garden city ideal was very popular, with cottage homes arranged with spacious gardens around broad streets. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
