Scope and Content Aerial view of harbour area of Aberdeen, Grampian Originally a small settlement at the mouth of the Denburn, Aberdeen was created a royal burgh by David I between 1124 and 1153. With 19th-century agricultural improvements, the city's population doubled as workers flocked to find alternative employment. This aerial view shows the city's harbour area, which expanded greatly during the 19th century. Thomas Telford extended the north pier and further developments included the Upper, Victoria and Albert Docks, plus the Regent and Waterloo Quays. With the introduction of trawl fishing in the 1880s, a fish processing plant was set up in the harbour area. However, the fishing industry declined in the 20th century, and from the 1970s, new oil-related industries have become more important in the city. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
