Scope and Content Aerial view of Fyvie Castle, Aberdeenshire, from north-west This photograph, taken in 1975, shows the castle and grounds from the air. The castle is the result of many centuries of development, and the two wings visible in this photograph have their origins in the original courtyard-plan structure, of which they formed two sides. The grounds are largely an 18th- and 19th-century creation, with extensive trees and shrubberies. Beyond the castle lies the 18th-century walled garden, and the old Home Farm, which also dates from the 18th century. There are five towers at Fyvie, and tradition holds that they were each built by one of the five families who have successively held the castle. It is unlikely that this is the case, but it illustrates the way in which Fyvie was constructed over the centuries. Fyvie Castle was first built in the 13th century, and was originally a royal stronghold in a hunting forest. Since 1984, the castle has been in the care of The National Trust for Scotland, and it is open to the public. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
