Scope and Content Aerial view of harbour area of Banff, Grampian Created a royal burgh between 1189 and 1198 by King William, Banff was one of the Northern Hanse, Scottish ports trading with the Baltic in the 12th century. Its harbour developed during its most prosperous period, from the 16th to the 18th centuries. This aerial view shows Banff's Seatown area and harbour. John Smeaton made improvements to the harbour in 1770-5, as did Thomas Telford in 1818. The growth of the herring industry in the 19th century led to further improvements. Banff experienced a post-World War II boom, with new suburbs springing up. Its centre continued to thrive, and after numerous demolitions, the Banff Preservation Society was set up in 1965 to save and restore some of the town's finest historic buildings.
