Scope and Content Aerial view from south west of Cupar, Fife Cupar began as a settlement around a castle of the Earls of Fife. The castle was demolished by King David II to stop the English from occupying it, but the town, a royal burgh since 1328 and seat of the sheriff of Fife, survived. The circular building, bottom left, is St Columba's R C Church (1964). Above is St Michael's Old Parish Church (medieval and Georgian). The railway curves from top right corner. The station is situated just before the second bridge. 18th and 19th-century redevelopment probably destroyed most of those of Cupar's earlier buildings that had survived the disastrous fires of 1616 and 1669. These included the houses of the local nobility who sold up to move to less urban locations. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
