Scope and Content Aerial view of the Broch of Mousa, Shetland The broch of Mousa occupies a low rocky headland overlooking the Sound of Mousa. Although unexcavated, it is thought that the broch was occupied between 100BC and AD200. Standing just over 13m in height, the broch wall is almost complete, probably having been abandoned intact. Mousa was also a well-known landmark to the Norse, and features in various sagas. Brochs are chiefly found in the north and north-west of Scotland. Use of two concentric drystone walls bonded with lintels allowed them to attain heights of over two storeys. This wall space contained an intra-mural stairway. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
