Scope and Content Aerial view of Thirlestane Castle, Scottish Borders Thirlestane Castle lies on the banks of the Leader Water c.0.25km north-east of Lauder. The original castle, an oblong block with round towers at each corner (centre), was built c.1590 for John Maitland, Chancellor of Scotland. As this aerial view shows, there have been a number of additions to this original block. In 1670-6, Sir William Bruce remodelled the castle for the Duke of Lauderdale, adding symmetrical flanking wings (left and right). William Burn and David Bryce extended these wings and added an adjoining service wing and stable courtyard (far left) in 1840-1. Restored 1978-82, the castle remains in the hands of the Maitlands and is open to the public. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
