Scope and Content View of main entrance on east wall of drying shed at brick and tile works, Blackpots, Aberdeenshire Blackpots Brick and Tile Works, c.3km west of Banff, was first established by Dr Saunders on his farm at Blackpots before 1788, when it was extended by his son. It finally reached its present layout in 1840 when it began manufacturing drainage tiles. This shows the east wall of the 71m-long drying shed on the site. The wooden flaps could be opened and closed to control the temperature within the shed. The tiles were laid out on four parallel racks inside to dry out before being fired in the kiln. Clay was extracted from a quarry nearby and transported in hand-operated bogies on a narrow-gauge railway. The works produced pantiles until the early 20th century, and bricks until 1946. Field drainage tiles were still being produced in the 1970s. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
