Scope and Content Dye-house woollen mill at Bridgend, Islay The woollen mill was built in 1883 on the east bank of the River Sorn which drove the waterwheel providing power for the machinery. It is typical of smaller country factories of the time. Finished yarn was washed and dyed in the dye-house. The small furnaces were used both to heat water for washing the yarn, and also to boil the yarn to fix the colour once it had been dyed. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
