Scope and Content Kiln void inside kippering-house on Albert Street, Pultneytown, Wick, Caithness The kippering-house on Albert Street in Wick is typical of its type. Though not well preserved, it does have a good example of a kipper-kiln. Originally the plant had four two-void kilns. The kiln void is the space above the fire where the herrings were placed to smoke. They were hung on tenter-sticks which rested on the horizontal rails. The smoking process took six to twelve hours.
