Scope and Content Royal Hotel, High Street, Fortrose, Highland Fortrose began as a settlement belonging to the canons of Fortrose Cathedral. It became a royal burgh in 1590, but in 1691 was said to be still a 'little village'. By the later 19th century, the town was an established holiday resort. The Royal Hotel was built in about 1835. The conical turret (left) was added by Matthews and Lawrie in 1879. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
