Scope and Content View down High Street of City Chambers, Kirkgate, Dunfermline, Fife The City Chambers were built by James C Walker in 1875-9 in Baronial style to replace an older Town-house on the same site. The massive tower dominates the High Street. The projecting turrets at the base of the spire are called bartizans. Historical styles like Scottish Baronial, inspired by Scottish castles, became popular in the 19th-century, partly because they reflected national, rather than Classical, architectural traditions.
