Scope and Content Palace of Holyroodhouse, Edinburgh The Palace origins lie in the 12th-century Abbey, where the Royal Family established more comfortable quarters than in the Castle. Much of the present building dates to the 16th and 17th centuries, the work being undertaken for James V and Charles II. The Abbey was founded by David I in 1128. He is rumoured to have gone hunting on a Holy Day and, as the result of a vision of a stag with a cross in its antlers, he gave over Royal hunting lands to the monks who prospered and started an elaborate building In the 16th century, the Palace was strongly associated with Mary Queen of Scots, but at the end of the 18th century it was home to the Comte d'Artois, later Charles X of France, and in the 19th century it was popular with Queen Victoria.
