Scope and Content Gravestone of Robert Robertson and Ann Goloway, Comrie Old Parish Church, Comrie, Perth & Kinross The top of this gravestone features a winged soul (symbol of the spirit ascending to Heaven after death). Below this, two fluted pilasters flank the main panel. Below a band of what may be interlaced hearts are carved the sock and coulter (metal parts) of a plough (the emblems of a farmer), a skull and crossed bones (mortality emblems) and an hourglass (symbol of life's brevity). Scottish gravestones feature a wealth of imagery and symbolic devices which represent trade emblems, symbols of death and resurrection, and Biblical scenes. They offer a fascinating insight into how our ancestors saw themselves and how they wanted to be remembered, as well as providing a store of information for people interested in family or local history, and folk art. This gravestone commemorates Robert Robertson and Ann Goloway, who both died in 1791. It is inscribed: 'HERE LYES INTERRED ROBERT ROB/ERTSON WHO DIED AUGUST 1791/AGED 55 AND ANN GOLOWAY HIS SPOUSE/WHO DIED AUGUST 1791 AGED 42'. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
