Scope and Content Gravestone of James Pender, Longforgan Parish Church, Main Street, Longforgan, Perth & Kinross This gravestone features two bold pilasters supporting a pediment. Under this hovers a winged soul (symbol of the spirit ascending to Heaven after death). From its breast a lion's head boss supports a swag of material draped over rings above a shield inscribed: '1800'. At the base of the stone are a bone, skull and coffin, the emblems of death. Scottish gravestones feature a wealth of imagery and symbolic devices which represent trade emblems, symbols of death and resurrection, and Biblical scenes. They offer a fascinating insight into how our ancestors saw themselves and how they wanted to be remembered, as well as providing a store of information for people interested in family or local history, and folk art. This gravestone commemorates James Pender, who died in 179[?]. It is inscribed: '1800/ERECTED/BY WILLIAM PENDER/WEAVER IN HAWKHILL/DUNDEE/IN MEMORY OF HIS SON/JAMES PENDER WHO ACC/IDENTALLY DEPARTED THIS/LIFE BY A CART AT LONG/FORGAN JUNE3rd 179.../AGED 22 YEARS'.
