Scope and Content Aerial view of Lochmaben Castle, Dumfries and Galloway Situated on a promontory projecting into Castle Loch, Edward I of England built a timber stronghold in 1298. The stone castle dates to the later 14th century. In this aerial view, excavations are underway within the castle. The well-preserved south curtain wall stands nearly at full height, though its facing of fine masonry is now gone. Between 1336 and 1384 the castle was in the care of an English constable, and was rebuilt in stone during the 1360s. Taken by the Scots in 1384, Lochmaben latterly became a royal castle.
