Description Former training centre and later housing gasholder distribution equipment, view from north east

Date 14/2/2017

Collection Historic Environment Scotland

Catalogue Number DP 249723

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Latterly the gasholders at Provan were used for storing natural or North Sea gas. The gasholder is as old as the manufacture of town gas as an industrial and public utility. Gasholders were a way of storing gas at a low pressure until needed for peak time distribution. Modern distribution systems, however, have removed the need to store gas. As a result many gasholders in the UK are now being decommissioned.
