Scope and Content This gasholder originally dates from 1903. It was reconstructed in the 1950s. Latterly the gasholders at Provan were used for storing natural or North Sea gas. The gasholder is as old as the manufacture of town gas as an industrial and public utility. Gasholders were a way of storing gas at a low pressure until needed for peak time distribution. Modern distribution systems, however, have removed the need to store gas. As a result many gasholders in the UK are now being decommissioned.
