Gasholder no.2, view from north east

DP 249702

Description Gasholder no.2, view from north east

Date 14/2/2017

Collection Historic Environment Scotland

Catalogue Number DP 249702

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content This gasholder dates from 1903. The gasholder is as old as the manufacture of town gas as an industrial and public utility. Gasholders were a way of storing gas at a low pressure until needed for peak time distribution. Latterly the gasholders at Provan were used for storing natural or North Sea gas only. Modern distribution systems, however, have removed the need to store gas. As a result many gasholdersin the UK are now being decommissioned.
