Scope and Content Provan No. 3 hasholder is water sealed, four lift spiral type and dates from 1970. It part sits on what was the pitch pits of the Provan chemical works that sat to the north of the Provan gasworks site. This chemical works added value by processing the bye-products of town gas manufacture at Provan gasworks. All of the Glasgow gasworks had a chemical works attached. A water sealed gasholder is one where the tank sits in water through which inlet and outlet pipes pass into the uppermost tank. Gas is pumped in and out at distribution pressure, the holder lifing or lowering as the gas in pumped in or out.
