Scope and Content Gravestone of William Hay, Old Parish Churchyard, Collace, Perth & Kinross This gravestone features a reclining figure of Old Father Time within the tympanum (top part). He rests upon a skull and hourglass, and holds the scythe with which he reaps time and thus the lives of men. On the right is a panel carved with the tools of a wright. Within the oval panel below stands a portrait of the deceased, wearing a bonnet with a bobble, knee breeches and a long coat. He holds a horse harness over his shoulders. The border of the panel is carved with leafy scrolls and flowers, emblems of rebirth. The pilasters at the side of this monument are carved with a series of initials, representing other members of the family buried beneath the stone. Just below the oval panel on the right can be seen a skull and crossbones, and on the left, a pair of crossed sextons' (gravedigger's) tools. These are emblems of death, designed to remind the viewer of their own mortality. This gravestone, erected in 1785, commemorates William Hay, who died in 1765, and Margaret Galla, who died in 1768. It is inscribed: 'Erected by David Hay wright/in Melginch in memory of his father William Hay wright/who died at Pattie 1765/aged 80 years also Margaret/Galla spouse of David Hay/who died at Windedge 1768/aged 66'.
