DP 241489

Description General view of thatched cottage and outbuilding; Cille Pheadair, South Uist.

Date 11/6/2015

Collection Records of the Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings, London, England

Catalogue Number DP 241489

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content New build cottage with outbuilding, both with thatched roofs. Neither building appears on the current web-based satellite imagery, of unknown date, suggesting that they were constructed fairly recently. Both the roof of the cottage and the outbuilding appear to be thatched in reed with either straw or marram ridges. The ridge comes down particularly low in comparison to other raised ridges in Scotland, and has been scobed using what appears to be hazel spars. Both roofs have been entirely netted, including across the ridge The thatch has been sculpted slightly above the window and door openings at the eaves.
