Scope and Content Gravestone commemorating Adam Robson and Jean Beattie, Teviothead churchyard, Scottish Borders This gravestone commemorates both Adam Robson, a tenant farmer, who died in 1760 aged 70 and his wife, Jean Beattie, who died in 1755 aged 65. Carved on the reverse of this stone is this portrait of Adam and Jean, arm in arm. His wife wears a plain dress and a cloth cap, covering her head. Adam is clad in the curled wig and long jacket typical of the 18th century. The graveyards of Scotland are an important part of the cultural heritage of the country and can provide fascinating information for people interested in family or local history, as well as vernacular art.
