Scope and Content Earth-house at Rennibister, Orkney This earth-house is at Rennibister. It was discovered in 1926 when its roof gave way under the weight of farm machinery passing overhead. The entrance is now via a ladder directly into the chamber, rather than by the original entrance passage. This is a plan showing the layout of the earth-house. The oval chamber was entered via a narrow stone lined passage. The corbelled roof was supported by 4 stone pillars. The chamber also has 5 recesses. When the earth-house was discovered, the end of the entrance passage was filled with domestic refuse and shells. The bones of 6 adults and 12 children were found dumped in the chamber. They had probably originally been buried elsewhere. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
