Scope and Content Settlement at Knap of Howar, Papa Westray, Orkney This neolithic settlement is at Knap of Howar. Until is was excavated in the 1930s much of the site was hidden by 4 m of sand. The settlement consists of two structures and would have been a single-family farmstead. This plan of the site shows the layout of the two structures. The larger structure, divided into two rooms, was the living area. The smaller structure, divided into three, was a barn and workshop. The buildings were linked by a short passage. Many of the finds from the site are now in the RMS. These include bone and stone tools and fragments of a local pottery known as Unstan Ware. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
