Scope and Content Mural monument commemorating Thomas Douglas, Roxburgh Churchyard, Scottish Borders This mural monument commemorates Thomas Douglas. No further details about him, such as when he died, are apparent. One possible explanation is that this may have been part of a headstone subsequently built into the wall. Within the left panel, a Green Man symbolises both renewal and the regeneration of life, illustrating the promise of Paradise. Beneath, an hourglass illustrates man's mortality. Death is signified by a skull and crossbones inside the right panel. The graveyards of Scotland are an important part of the cultural heritage of the country and can provide fascinating information for people interested in family or local history, as well as vernacular art.
