Scope and Content Gravestone commemorating Richard Hewat, Roxburgh churchyard, Scottish Borders This gravestone commemorates Richard Hewat, who died in 1776 aged 69. Richard's epitaph proclaims him to have been '...an honest and industrious man and a sincere and devout Christian'. Signifying the soul's ascent to heaven, this cherub is more akin to those found in England, portrayed as young, beautiful and innocent. A skull and hourglass signify death and human mortality. Beneath, the inscription is bordered by Corinthian pilasters. The graveyards of Scotland are an important part of the cultural heritage of the country and can provide fascinating information for people interested in family or local history, as well as vernacular art.
