Scope and Content Gravestone commemorating James Hewet, Roxburgh churchyard, Scottish Borders This gravestone commemorates James Hewet, who died in 1745. Symbolising the soul's ascent to heaven, the winged cherub is depicted against a background of clouds. Beneath, crossbones and skulls, now partially obscured, hang on ribbons suspended from a pair of rings signifying death. The graveyards of Scotland are an important part of the cultural heritage of the country and can provide fascinating information for people interested in family or local history, as well as vernacular art.
