Archive History The collection comprises three accessions of material, presented between 1967 and 1995. Acc No 1968/9 Collection of plans from office of MacLaren, Soutar and Salmond. Acc No 1972/5 Drawings from the office of James Maclaren & Son, Dundee. Acc No 1995/44 MacLaren, Soutar & Salmond card index in its wooden box. The top drawer used to be labelled 'Plans Index', the lower drawer reads 'valuations'.

Administrative History The practice was established by James MacLaren (1829-93) in 1850. In 1873 George Shaw Aitken (1839-1921) was assumed into partnership, but the partnership was broken c1879. Subsequently George Gordon MacLaren (1856-99) and John Turnbull MacLaren (1864-1948) were assumed into partnership and the practice became James MacLaren & Sons, then, with Charles G Soutar (1878-1952), MacLaren Sons & Soutar and finally, with the inclusion of James Salmond (d1905) and Frank Salmond (d1911) (and later William Salmond (d c1955)) MacLaren Soutar & Salmond.
