Scope and Content Advocate's Close, High Street, Edinburgh Advocate's Close, so narrow 'that there is hardly space for fresh air', dates from the 16th century. It led off the High Street down to the Nor' Loch and is one of the most picturesque in the Old Town. The narrow, steep close has its entrance in High Street. The stair tower, built for the 17th-century tenement originally running down the west side of the close, now serves the 18th-century High Street tenement. Advocate's Close, named Cant's, Clement Cor's and then Stewart's Close, was named after Sir James Stewart of Goodtrees who was Lord Advocate from 1692-1713. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
