Scope and Content Written on the back of the mounted print: 'Place: Edinburgh. Building: Rockville, 5 Napier Road' Photographer: 'G N' Date: 'July 1964' Designed by Sir James Gowans (1822-90) in 1858, Rockville was a remarkable structure. Based around stone frames infilled with rubble, the walls were further ornamented with carvings and cast iron. Despite rescue attempts, it was demolished in 1965. This shows the rear of the building. The stonework is arranged in a grid pattern with elaborate cast iron balconies adding further richness to the exterior, especially on the tower. Dormer windows in various decorative designs break the roofline. This house had such an extraordinary design that it gained several local nicknames including 'The Pagoda', 'Nightmare Abbey', The Crazy-Paving House' and 'Tottering Towers'.
