Scope and Content Written on the back of the mounted print: 'Place: Edinburgh. Building: Rockville, 5 Napier Road' Photographer: 'G N' Date: 'July 1964' Rockville was built by architect Sir James Gowans (1822-90) as his own home in 1858. It was an extraordinary structure built using dressed stone frames infilled with rubble. Despite local attempts to save it, this unique building was demolished in 1965. This photograph shows Rockville with its striking tower with cast iron balconies, which bear the initials of the architect. The windows and chimneys are covered in carved details and the walls with an elaborate grid of stonework. Rockville was reputed to contain stone from every quarry in Scotland. Its rich exterior was further decorated with bas-reliefs representing the Arts. The interior was equally opulent, with stained glass, tiled floors, and carved woodwork.
