Scope and Content Broch at Midhowe, Rousay, Orkney The broch of Midhowe is built on a small promontory. The outer defences are confined to the landward side. A sea wall was built during the 1930s to put an end to the erosion which had destroyed part of the west side of the site. This is an aerial view of the broch. It is likely that the broch was a fortified family house. The external buildings were added later, when defence was not so important, because they are built over the ditch and directly against the rampart. Many finds from the site are now in the Royal Museum of Scotland in Edinburgh, with metalwork, jewellery and a number of bone and stone tools. A Roman bronze ladle was probably acquired through trading or raiding and not by direct contact. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
