Scope and Content Paisley Museum, Loom Gallery. Dan Coughlan, curator of textile machinery explains the 'harness' on the Jaquard loom. The harness compresses (into a small area) a high capacity for creating patterns. In each repeat there are 400 hundred harness chords. That is the equivalent of having 400 shafts on a plain loom, which would be impossible. The way the harness is tied up depends on the pattern being woven. This example has 4,000 chords (10 repeats of 400 chords) and tied up to produce a mirror image pattern. The pattern for the cloth is contained in the Jaquard cards and one card at a time is presented to the needles. Where the holes are in the cards, the needles go through and where there are blanks, the needles are held back. When the card moves towards the needles it selects the hooks that are to be raised and which ones are to be left down. Every time the weaver presses down the treddle a new card is presented automatically to the needles. This selects a different set of threads to be raised. Each time the threads are raised the weaver throws the shuttle through the shed to weave the cloth. The maker of the Jaquard device on the loom is John T Hardaker (jaquard and loom makers, Bowling, Bradford, England now based in Mumbai, India). Sound: sound Colour: colour Running Time: 01:14 mins
