Dan Coughlan, curator of textile machinery, explains shuttle box, stretcher, the 'shed' and how this is created by pressing the treddles allowing the shuttle to pass the warp thread through the 'shed' (or space made between the raised and lowered weft ends or threads). A lot of cloth could be made in a short period of time. The bobbin or pirn of thread (the weft) is placed in the shuttle. These shuttles were made of box wood (a smooth, non snagging wood). The shuttles are placed in the automatic shuttle box which was invented in 1732 to speed up the weaving process. Prior to this the shuttle was passed through the shed by hand.
