Scope and Content Printing. This is a flatbed, large Demy printing machine known as a Wharfedale printing press. By John Kelly and Co. of Otley, Yorkshire. Electrically driven, originally it may have been hand operated. It is on this printing press that the Blairgowrie Advertiser (or 'Blairie') was printed until 1978. the date of this printing press in unknown. The Wharfedale printing press was first built in 1856 by the company Dawson, Payne and Elliot. The Wharfedale revioutionised printing as it introduced the cylinder which when used with the flatbed offered a more efficent printing process than the traditional method of printing with two flat surfaces. The design changed very little from 1856 until the mid 20th century.
