Description View of stone with various tools. The stone is actually made of iron, but the term stone comes from early printing.

Date 1/9/2015

Collection Records of the Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Scotland (RCAHMS), Edinbu

Catalogue Number DP 221350

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Compositing: The type would be compiled into text by the compositor prior to printing on a printing press. This was done at the 'galley' using the setting stick or tray open at one end which held type placed there by the compositor. The 'galley' or set text was then taken to the 'stone' or working surface (in reality solid metal rather than the historical material used - stone). The text was then transferred to the 'chase' or frame to make the 'form' or piece of work to be printed.
