Scope and Content Compositing: Type would be compiled into text by the compositor prior to printing on a printing press. This is done at the galley using the setting stick or tray open at one end which held the composed type placed there by the compositor by choosing type from the upper and lower cases. This type is added to the galley to build up the required text, spaces etc. The galley is then taken to the 'stone' (in this case, a metal slab) or working surface where the type is removed from the galley and placed into the 'chase' or metal frame. Then quoins and other furniture are added to create the desired layout in the chase. Here the compositor uses a key to lock the type, and fillers (quoins and other furniture) into place. A mallet and wooden block is used to make sure the surface is level. This layout is referred to as the 'form' or piece of work to be printed.
