Scope and Content This entry describes Charles Calder’s notebook for recording buildings and other monuments in the counties of West Lothian and Fife, 1926–8. It contains measured sketches which were subsequently used in the preparation of drawings to illustrate the RCAHMS Inventories published in 1929 and 1933 respectively. An index provides a list of subjects which include dovecots, churches, houses and castles (about 50 in total) dating to the period before 1707, including a series of notes of architectural details, inscribed stones, bells etc which Calder encountered during his fieldwork. While most of the subjects are readily identifiable (e.g. Clatto Castle), the individual buildings and armorial panels in Culross in particular (p109–11) must be identified with care, using the final published map and descriptions (RCAHMS 1933, 81–5).
