Description Report: 'Data Structure Report for the 2007 Excavation at Long Howe, Tankerness, Orkney'

Date 12/2007

Collection Orkney Research Centre for Archaeology (ORCA)

Catalogue Number MS 7658

Category Manuscripts

Scope and Content The excavation at Long Howe, Tankerness was run by Orkney College UHI as a traing excavation as part of an undergraduate course. The site comprises a burial mound of Bronze Age date together with a flint scatter of Mesolithic date. It had been previously investigated in 2004 as part of the Mine Howe environs Project. The 2007 excavation was intended to provide information on the construction of the mound and to assess the potential of the Mesolithic remains. The excavation revealed two main phases of construction within the barrow, separated by a capping of cairn material. Outer and inner kerbs were located, and flints, including several microliths, were retrieved. A fragment of hazelnut shell was found and has been C14 dated, giving a result of 7900 +/- 35 years BP, thus dating the Mesolithic activity in the area, though no in situ Mesolithic remains were found. The report consists of 33 pages
