Scope and Content Titled: 'Milton Lockhart House' with descriptive caption: 'Milton Lockhart is the property of the Rev. Lawrence Lockhart. His brother, the late William Lockhart, M.P. for Lanarkshire, acquired it from Dr Jeffrey of Glasgow, the celebrated anatomist, and, about 1831, erected this magnificent House, the site having been selected by Sir Walter Scott and John Greenshields. The design of the building was furnished by Mr Burn, and it is considered one of his best works. The situation of the mansion, on a peninsula projecting into the valley of the Clyde, with a background of deep glens and wooded hills, is exceedingly beautiful. John Gibson Lockhart, one of Scotland's keenest and brightest intellects, passed many a leisure hour at this place; and when, white with sorrow, he paid his last visit to it, just before going to die at Abbotsford, many good men felt, "we ne'er shall look upon his like again'.
