Scope and Content Titled: 'Bothwell Castle' with descriptive caption: 'This fine old castle is situated not far from Bothwell village. It occupies a commanding position on the summit of a gentle declivity overlooking the river Clyde. Judging from the walls, which are in some places 15 feet thick and 60 feet high, and the extensive area covered by the ruins, Bothwell Castle must have been a place of great strength and size. Little is known of its origin; but from the reign of Alexander II, when it belonged to Walter Olifard, Justiciary of Lothian, who died in 1242, it frequently changed owners, and came, amid great vicissitudes of fortune, into the possession of many of our best Scottish families. It is now the property of the Countess of Home, the nearest represantative of the ancient and noble family of Douglas. The scenery around the Castle is very beautiful, and attracts many tourists and visitors from all quarters. Our largest view is taken from a point on the river above the Castle. The two smaller views are taken from the interior'. PHOTOGRAPH ALBUM No.164: LANARKSHIRE ALBUM
