Scope and Content Plan of the stone circle, Burgh Hill, Roxburghshire It is not known why stone circles were built. They might have had astronomical, ceremonial, or ritual significance. It is believed that the builders of the circles followed complex mathematical rules when constructing them. This is a plan of the stone circle at Burgh Hill. There are 25 stones, 13 of which are erect. The stones are placed in an egg-shaped ring. The height of the stones vary but only one is as tall as 1.5m. The nearby hills were quite settled in the Iron Age by British tribes, so labour was available to raise the stones. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
