Administrative History Between 1972 and 1974 Professor Colin Renfrew directed a series of excavations of sites in Orkney. The investigations, of the chambered cairns of Maes Howe and Quanterness, and the stone circle of Ring of Brogar, were in part intended to clarify questions of chronology, seeking material for the the first radio-carbon dating of Orcadian sites, and to investigate the physical and social environment of the monuments.
