Scope and Content Charles Laing and Son. Interior. Casting Process. Making up the mould. Andrew Laing, of Charles Laing and Son Ltd is a third generation brass and iron moulder. Andrew has placed the patterns into the mould. The half mould box has been placed on top ready for the next phase where Andrew sieves fine facing sand (green sand with added ingredients of coal dust and clay to give strength and to produce coal gas to help with surface finish). The sieving removes foreigh bodies. The green sand is sieved on filling the top or cope part of the mould. The mould is now 'finger rammed' to begin to firm up the cope, firming the sand around the patterns. Andrew then completes the filling of the cope or upper mould. He then 'pin rams' the cope to firm up the sand. Green sand describes the manner in which it is used, not its colour. The sand is quarried for the fundry and comes into the foundry damp. The clay surface on the grains enables the sand to adhere together. Thus it is called green as it is not treated by the foundry and is used in its 'green state'.
