Scope and Content Inscription on stone: 'Erected by the public of St Andrews in memory of the crew of the barque "Merlin" of Sunderland which was wrecked at St Andrews on the 5th of March 1881. The following are the names of the crew: Capt Griffith Lewis aged 41 years, J G Brown 28, W Carty 24, Benjamin Pitt 64, C Coulson 20, John Neal 26, Cuthbert Dixon 24, S Rowe 18, Charles Swinney 19, R Hetherington 19, Lynn Klaas Post 39'.
