Scope and Content The Union Canal was constructed between 1818 and 1822 to designs by engineer Hugh Baird (1770-1807). Along its length were a series of wooden drawbridges and stone fixed bridges. This bridge, carrying Yeaman Place over the canal, was built much later, in 1896, when the lands of the former Walker estates were being developed as the city expanded, and tenements were built to accommodate the workers in the nearby industries of Fountainbridge. Designed by engineer for the Town Council, David G Proudfoot (n.d.), the bridge comprises a single-span plate girder supporting an open arcaded cast-iron parapet, now painted with sky blue, black and red detailing. On each corner of the parapet is a square pier surmounted by a ball finial, with a short curved section of wall linking to adjoining tenements/buildings. There is a commemorative bronze panel on the north-east pier which reads: 'Walker Bridge Erected 1896 The Right Hone. Andrew McDonald Lord Provost David C Proudfoot Engineer'.
