Scope and Content The Union Canal was built between 1818 and 1822, and this bridge carrying the Viewforth thoroughfare north-south over the canal was constructed at the same time by the canal's engineer, Hugh Baird (1770-1827). The bridge slopes gently on either side of the canal, and comprises a single shallow segmental arch of yellow sandstone. The section over the canal has a railed parapet with octagonal piers on each side. The central keystone of the arch on either side is surmounted by a corbel containing a carved emblem: on the north-east side is a castle representing Edinburgh; on the south-west side is a tree, one of the symbols from Glasgow's coat of arms.
